Malahat Hosseini · Staff Product Designer

I turn complexity to something users' actually use

I use research, analysis and storytelling to turn ambiguous, high-stakes problems into vision, roadmaps & designs.

I’m Malahat, a product designer with 15 years in complex enterprise SaaS.

At Microsoft I brought clarity to a stalled organization in a high-stakes situation, and a redesign I led drove a 48% increase in adoption.

Strategy Visioning Delivery

Revisioning an enterprise application used by 80% of US radiology departments

Microsoft-HLS · 2024

An important application was posing significant adoption and retention risk. In one quarter I framed the problem, gave the org a direction it could build on and led a very fast-paced delivery through to final, shipped design.

Outcome: 48% adoption lift and customer praise.

HOW I WORK

I start from stories+

To me, the story of the future is the basis of product design. Stripped of tools and technology, it’s a simple account of how a person’s life is transformed by the product or feature. A feature or product is valuable to a user as much as that story is a good story. In a good story, a user is not just satisfied by their task, they are satisfied by the job and by extension their sense of self in life.

I am pragmatic & a big picture thinker+

I am a big picture thinker and like to work smart. In deciding on process, I stick to principles to find the best fit for each project based on budget, time and stakeholder personalities and workstyles.

I think we are smarter when we think together+

I believe in the power of the collective mind in shaping the best product. Different perspectives sharpen the thinking and surface ideas no one person arrives at alone. I contain, process and integrate those perspectives, and weigh them against the user’s core needs and the real scenarios they work in. I land the team on a final design shaped by my design training and fifteen years of judgment about what will actually hold up in use.

I am always expanding my AI knowledge and competencies+

I have a good knowledge of how LLMs work and stay current on the field. At Microsoft, I was active in the Responsible Design community on AI over-reliance and mitigations, and brought that lens to design reviews of AI automation in my team. I also had discussions with ML designers on future directions for my projects.

AI tools were only made available to us in my last months at Microsoft, but I was a pioneer user, prototyping early with Figma Make. I now use Claude Code, and built this portfolio with it while taking advanced courses on AI in the design process.

I have solid experience and knowledge of Secure by Design+

Most of my 15 years has been in contexts where data security and user error mitigation carried real stakes. I default to that mindset, and I've contributed to the secure-by-design UX patterns used company-wide at Microsoft.

I find humour in everyday life+

I love to laugh at the quirkiness of situations and limitations we find ourselves in, and believe in collegial relationships and enjoying our work together.
